In the book, Escape from Mr. Lemoncello's Library by Chris Grabenstein, 12 year old Kyle Keely and his friends try to escape from the locked library faster than Charles Chiltington and the rest of the contestants in a race to get out of the library first. In this exciting adventure fiction novel, there are twists, turns, and many laughs. There are surprising eliminations in this contest to be first. What I likes were the parts where Kyle does not think in the most orthodox way about the puzzle to get out of the library. This book is one in a series of four books with Kyle and his friends in different challenging situations. I would recommend all of them if you reading books that are both funny and adventurous! I would recommend Blood on the River by Elisa Carbone to mainly 4th, 5th, and 6th graders. It’s about Jamestown 1607 where a bunch of greedy men from England sailed to Virginia to find gold and silver to bring back for riches. The main character, Sam, is a servant for Captain John Smith who was probably their best leader. It talks about how they survived throughout their trip and what happened when and where. This book is historical fiction so it is mostly true, but the main character and his friends are made up. And there are even little quotes in the beginning of each chapter made by the actual people that went on the boat. I think that some of the choices of where to go, what to do and how to do it made by the characters were pretty foolish. But for all the decisions the characters made, I think it is still a really good book. Recommended by Co. L. Stickman Odyssey by Christopher Ford is about a stickman who is trying to complete a to save his homeland and by doing that he has to go to the edge of the world and fight huge battles just save the world. So if you’re into fighting, comics, and action I suggest you read this great thrilling book! The only thing I agreed with the stickman about was when they were stuck in a cave and there were two people. One told the truth and one told lies. The person who tells the truth is the one that would get them out. The one that told the lies is the one who would get them killed. So he went to one of them and kicked one of them and asked “did that hurt!?” and the person said “Not at all...” So he knew that he was lying. That was also my favorite part! This book reminds me of Mario Odyssey, which is a video game where you’re trying to travel around the world. They're pretty much the same. Recommended by D.Y. Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone is one of the best books you’ll ever read. The author J.K. Rowling does a fantastic job. Although this is a fantasy book, it still has realistic situations on multiple occasions. This is the first of 7 incredible books. Harry Potter, a normal 10 year old boy that has never met his parents has lived with his uncle and aunt, who have hated Harry his whole life. Then on his 10th birthday he is told he’s a wizard! Then he goes to a wizarding school, and he has incredible journeys and meets friends along the way! Harry Potter is a fantastic book and I recommend it because it’s so unpredictable! Whenever you think something is going to happen it, it might be the exact opposite! Another reason this book is amazing is because of the message it sends of friendship and doing what’s right. In conclusion, Harry Potter is a great book for all ages, and I hope you’ll read this amazing book! Recommended by N.Y. As a fourth grader, I have read and am reading many memorable books, but a book called “Strawberry Hill” by Mary Ann Hoberman is one of my favorites. It is a historical fiction novel set back in the time period of the Great Depression, in the 1930s. The main character is a girl called Alice (Allie) Sherman who is ten years old. She lives in a two family home with her best friend Ruthie Greenberg and shares a room with her brother Danny in New Haven, Connecticut, but one day her father loses his job and tells the family that they will have to move away to a new town and go to a new school. Although she is told that they will live in their very own house and that she will get her own room, Allie is mad. That is, until she finds out that her street will be called Strawberry Hill. Throughout the book, Allie is on a quest to find a new “best friend,” and faces challenges like taunting, fights, and a new school. Something I like about this book is that it tells the story of a fictional character in a real life situation. It shows that there is always hope lingering around, and that when something bad happens it is not the end of the world or time to give up. I can connect to Strawberry Hill because I, like Allie, had to move to a new place and make friends. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes historical fiction novels that are amazing, impossible to put down, and, in a way, magical. Recommended by E.R. Over the Moon is an extraordinary book full of creativity and emotion. Natalie Lloyd is the author of Over the Moon. It is a fantasy book with exciting characters in it. The main character is 12 year old Mallie Ramble; a servant to a family called the Tumbrels. The Tumbrel family is awfully mean to Mallie, and they treat her like dirt on the sidewalk. Part of why Mallie gets bullied is because of her popsnap. A popsnap is a stiff, fake arm that replaces her real one. Mallie is brave and fierce, but the Tumbrels’ bullying bothers her. Her home, Coal Top, isn’t your everyday place. It’s covered in dust. Not regular dust on your window, but dust clouds, blobs, and goo. If you inhale the dust, it feels like your insides are turning to ash. Bad memories will play in your mind again, making all emotions upset. Dust isn’t the only thing in Coal Top that’s a problem. Denver, Mallie’s little brother, might be in trouble. Mallie sees an opportunity to help Denver. An offer to go on missions and earn rewards every time your mission is complete. It might not be what Mallie thought though. Mortimer Good is running the program, but how good is he and the offer? Read “Over the Moon” to find out more surprises and secrets. Recommended by Ca. L. I recommend the book Wishtree by Katherine Applegate. This story is about an oak tree named Red who is, if i don't say myself, a very popular tree who gets a lot of wishes but some people don't like that. The genre of Wishtree is fiction. Some other characters in Wishtree are Bongo and Crow. I don't really think that a tree and a crow really could be good friends but they make it seem like they were always friends. What I liked about this book is that there were a lot of cliffhangers which just made you want to keep reading. Recommended by V.K. The book I am writing about is called Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of Nimh. This book has 233 pages and 28 chapters and the author is Robert C. O'Brien. It is about a mouse named Mrs. Frisby who has to move her house/family because winter is coming to an end. But 1 of her 4 children is sick with pneumonia so she has to stay in bed. She most certainly can't survive the house move but if they stay they will die because of the lawn mower. Fortunately, she encountered the rats of Nimh who are very intelligent rats. This book has cliff hangers, sadness, excitement, mystery, and more. Recommended by C.K. This book review is about The Unwanteds by Lisa McMann. This is a series of six books. The book I’m going to concentrate on in this report is book four, which is titled The Unwanteds: Island of Legends. Its genre is Fantasy. The main characters are Alex, Lani, Sky, Crow, Samheed (Sam), Simber, Meghan (Meg), and Florence. They are tight friends, and Alex, Lani, Sam, Meg, Sky, and Crow being teenagers and Simber and Florence being - yes, this is true - living statues. They are all a crucial part to the story, without any of them, none would survive. This book starts with Alex and the others in a boat, bound to sail to the island of pirates to save Sky and Crow’s mother. After meeting a massive evil eel, they “lose” Florence but still manage to make it into the pirate island. Later, they travel to the mythical Island of Legends. There they meet the giant eel again. After that, they keep on traveling west, hoping there is some land that way, then get “looped” back far to the east. Then the book ends in an ominous way, there being a magical call for help from Artimé. My favorite part of this book is that there is suspense at every page, and the book will give you ominous warnings about the main characters’ biggest enemy that the main characters don’t know about, which will keep you on your toes every chapter. I recommend this book to everyone who likes fantasy, hidden secrets in plain sight, and most of all, suspense and surprise. I also think that this book has a connection to the book Eragon. I feel that they are in the same theme. Recommended by S.G. The book I was reading is called Who Was Anne Frank? by Ann Abramson. The book was about a girl named Anne Frank who was 13 and started writing a diary about hiding from the Nazis. The reason the Franks were hiding was because they were Jewish and the Nazis wanted to take them away and put them in prisons or kill them. The Franks moved a few times to escape the Nazis. Eventually the Nazis caught the Franks and put them in concentration camp. The whole family died except for Otto Frank. Then Otto published Anne’s diary and now it's very popular. I thought the author explained Anne's life well. I felt like I was right there with the Frank family. If you like learning about history you should read this book. Recommended by J.G. |
